Google Analytics Code Setup

Once you have a Google Analytics account and property set up, and have access to your Website source code, you can complete the process of setting up your Google Analytics code.

Sign into your Google Analytics account and click “admin” in the top left corner of the screen. From the account and property columns, choose the property that you are working with and click on “Tracking Info/Tracking Code.”

Your tracking code appears in a box as several lines of JavaScript. It begins with. Copy and paste the snippet into every page on your Website that you want to track. Paste it immediately before the closing tag. Needless to say, it is imperative that you do not alter the code in any way. If you are pasting the tracking code on a blog, you can simply paste it on the sidebar that automatically appears on all of your pages.

After you have inserted the Google Analytics code into all of the pages that you want to track, you can customize it in order to collect data that is not automatically tracked. For instance, “event” tracking allows you to gather information about how visitors use the interactive features on your Website, like videos, buttons, downloads, and links. Do your visitors use these features? Are they integrated in the best way possible?

“Ecommerce” for Commercial Sites

If you are a commercial site, you will want to include “Ecommerce” tracking to collect data on sales and products. These data can be integrated into reports based on the information culled already by Google Analytics.

You may have two Websites and you want Google Analytics to integrate data from them both and create one report. In that case, you will need to set up “cross domain tracking.”
