The history of the major players in the Web analytics industry, by Devrun Web agency

The Devrun Web agency specializes in Web analytics and has prepared for you a brief history of the most important players in the industry. Using the Web for commercial purposes has become an essential means for businesses to carry out marketing operations. To assess the performance and traffic of their website, businesses use tools specifically developed by companies that specialize in Web analytics. Using these tools enables them to analyze their Web traffic in order to improve their search engine optimization practices. This article will outline the history of major players of the Web analytics industry i.e. Omniture Adobe, Coremetrics and Google.

First of all, Omniture was founded in 1996 by Josh James and John Pestana, and has experienced rapid growth, so much that it has been part of Inc.’s 500 fastest-growing private companies list.

Later, in 2006, Omniture was listed on the electronic NASDAQ market. Its growth was reflected also by the acquisition of companies such as Touch Clarity, Visual Sciences, Offermatica and Mercado. In 2009, Omniture was in turn purchased by the giant Adobe.

The latter was founded in December 1982 by John Warnick and Charles Geschke, who came from Xerox PARC. In 2005, Adobe purchased Macromedia – which came with software such as Dreamweaver and Flash – for a total amount of US$ 3.4 billion. By carrying out this specific transaction, Adobe made sure to acquire a competing company in order to consolidate its prime position in software production geared towards designers and developers, as well as Web analytics.

For its part, Coremetrics was founded by Arthur Holcombe back in 1999. Coremetrics has made itself known mostly because of its digital marketing services that include website optimization for businesses, among other things.

This company was so successful that computer giant IBM acquired it in 2010. This transaction was a direct response to Omniture being purchased by Adobe. These multiple transactions were a part of a strategy thought by major companies in order to take the lead position in the Web analytics industry.

Spectacular growth in this new market niche has led to fierce competition among the big players that developed many e-commerce business solutions.

And last but not least, Google is one major company that plays an important role in the history of Web analytics, analysis tools and website optimization.

This company founded in California back in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin is the perfect example of an American success-story. Google is the most widely used search engine in the world, and is light years away from its competitors. This company is one of the biggest Web-based businesses and is a part – along with Apple, Facebook, and Amazon – of the Big Four. Over the course of its history, Google has developed a plethora of applications and a variety of software, as well as purchased several other companies – Picasa, Android, YouTube, DoubleClick, and Waze.
